Relief for Sandy Victims – Donna Vanzant Marina Owner

Fascinating – many of us saw this news clip. Note what Obama says to the owner of the marina who he is giving a hug… a picture of that hug went viral days before the election. Prime example of the optics having NO bearing on reality…

This is a transcription I found of the exchange —

OBAMA: (Sees Vanzant, turns around, walks over to her. At this point, I think the woman was already crying and Obama saw it, that’s why he came over.)

How are you? Are you okay? (Obama comes closer and gives her a hug.)

It’s tougher here. We’re gonna help you, we’re gonna help you get it all together, all right? I promise, promise. You’re gonna be okay. Everybody’s safe, right?

VANZANT (nods).

OBAMA: That’s the most important thing, then we’re gonna get this whole thing set up. I got my guy Craig (Obama, still hugging woman, yells for Craig).

CRAIG: Yes sir.

OBAMA: This is the owner of the marina, right here. I wanna make sure that she knows that we’re gonna immediately make sure that she gets the help she needs to get this all back together again.

VANZANT (Voice breaking, President still holding her): Thank you, thank you.

Fast forward to January 2013 – this is a follow up interview with Donna Vanzant — I bet the mainstream media won’t cover this…

On October 31st, in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, a soon-to-be-reelected President Barack Obama joined New Jersey Governor Chris Christie for a survey of the devastation at the Jersey Shore. In Brigantine, Obama embraced distraught local business owner Donna Vanzant, whose North Point Marina sustained widespread damage during the storm.

Obama promised her “immediate” assistance, and the photo of their hug went viral days before the election. Now that months have passed since Sandy, I called Vanzant to find out if Obama made good on his promise.

I can’t imagine what you and others at the Shore have been through. How are you holding up?
[Pause] I am surviving. Just surviving. My biggest problem at this point is the insurance companies. Big time. I’ve heard of people that have gotten money from FEMA, but of course FEMA doesn’t help businesses. I’m waiting on my flood policy to come through and help rebuild. Without them sending the money, I can’t start.

Who is your insurer, and what are they telling you?
The insurer is RLI. They don’t even return calls. The insurance companies have also been dragging their feet with the owners of the boats who dock here. I’m losing customers left and right because the insurance company is totaling their boats, which they should not be totaling, because they did not go underwater. They floated and landed. And with each boat they total, I feel like I am being slapped in every direction possible.

Can you put a monetary value on the damage that you have sustained?
I have probably suffered $500,000 in losses. And we’ve lost all of our docks and our bulkhead, and the estimate for that is $200,000, and you can’t get insurance on your docks or bulkhead. And now I am hearing on the TV news that the insurance companies may be running out of money.

Realistically, what is your outlook for the next season?
We’re into January, and we should be starting business back up in March. We’re all worried. If we don’t get that money, the whole coast will be gone. There is devastation all over the coast. We’ve been paying these insurance premiums forever. If I didn’t pay, they would certainly cancel my policy, but now that I need the money, where are they? I feel like sometimes they try to make it too difficult so that people give up and walk away. But I’ve worked too hard for this. If it was the last job on Earth, I wouldn’t work for an insurance company. I couldn’t do what they do to people. I couldn’t sleep at night.

President Obama comforted you and offered you “immediate” assistance. Since your encounter with him months ago, what has been your interaction with the White House?
After his visit, I sent an email to President Obama. Many days later, I got a response back. It was disturbing.

How so?
It had nothing to do with what I was asking him. It was a form letter. It thanked me for supporting the troops. He made a promise to rebuild on national television, and I can’t even get this money. It’s heartbreaking, really. I did reach out to Senator Whelan, and I got a response that they were forwarding my email to the person that Governor Christie put in charge of Sandy relief. But from President Obama, I got a form letter.

What were you hoping for?
When you get a hug from the President of the United States, you feel like there’s something there. A promise was made. I have two grown kids. One is a U.S. Navy diver. The other one lives at the marina with his wife and new baby, and they lost everything. But I raised my kids to know that your word is your word. You promise something, you keep it, and that was a broken promise. I’ve never been a person to expect free handouts, but the President gave me hope. But now, I just don’t know.

This was reported in a couple of different locations, but I picked the Philly source, mainly because of the resounding win that Obama had there. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions….

Sandy Relief Bill

There is a lot of belly aching going on about the House of Representatives not passing the Relief Bill for the Sandy Victims. This is so typical — people and the media complain and complain, but they don’t take a closer look. So, let’s take a look at what I believe is holding them back.

These are a number of other things included in the Sandy Relief bill — take a look at where 1/3 of the money is allocated to go… note the BILLIONS of dollars with NO plan. Let’s be honest, over the last 4 years in particular, haven’t we seen far too many examples of what happens when the government has no financial plan? They waste enough money when they do have a plan…

What looks like a greatly needed bill by it’s title, turns out to be laden with Congressional pet projects and pork.  Folks made fun of those who voted against the Clean Water Act for similar reasons… I mean it IS Clean Water… who could possible be against that? Same goes for this bill, the Sandy Relief package has a few items that don’t seem to fit.

Don’t ever let  a Crisis go to waste.  I mean you have a Hurricane and people need relief, whats wrong with adding a few items for the greater good?

Here is the list

•$2 million to repair damage to the roofs of museums in Washington, D.C., while many in Hurricane Sandy’s path still have no roof over their own heads.

•$150 million for fisheries as far away from the storm’s path as Alaska.

•$125 million for the Department of Agriculture’s Emergency Watershed Protection program, which helps restore watersheds damaged by wildfires and drought.

•$20 million for a nationwide Water Resources Priorities Study.

•$15 million for NASA facilities, though NASA itself has called its damage from the hurricane ‘minimal.’

•$50 million in subsidies for tree planting on private properties.

•$336 million for taxpayer-supported AMTRAK without any detailed plan for how the money will be spent.

•$5.3 billion for the Army Corps of Engineers – more than the Corps’ annual budget – with no statement of priorities about how to spend the money.

•$12.9 billion for future disaster mitigation activities and studies, without identifying a single way to pay for it.

The Anger and Hate Need to Stop

hate is taught

I was thinking about the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut and I was considering a perspective I haven’t seen in the news yet…

Consider that the US just saw the end of the most vicious presidential campaign in recent history. Even after the election, Mitt Romney is still being insulted nightly on late night talk shows. Any person would have a tough time being in the media spotlight that is shone on most presidential candidates – but people who are being honest, will admit this year was far worse than usual. We saw glimpses of what would happen in the primary between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, but the machine definitely pulled out all the stops this year. With the never ending ads that spewed hate from our television screens – what kind of impact do you think that had on young people? When they see this – they learn the fallacy that the strong person who is willing to stomp the competition will win.

Consider these headlines – what message does this send to adults and young people…

With these kind of messages coming from the most powerful people in the country — what message is being sent to adults and children?

Hurricane Sandy – Countries to Thank

Just got this e-mail and couldn’t have said it better. But let me add — if you know of any countries that should be on this list, definitely let me know and I’ll update the post upon confirmation.

As you know, America is the first country  to send aid when other countries are in trouble.
It is highly appropriate that we now send THANKS to all of the countries
that reciprocated for our help with their disasters, misgivings, social turmoil, & poverty by sending to the United States of   America monetary and physical help when Sandy ravaged our East Coast  leaving dead, homelessness, and pure disaster.
Listed  below are all the Countries and World Organizations that are giving us gracious assistance.  Please assist in thanking these entities by passing on this email so people all over America can join in and THANK our neighbors, whom we have assisted with BILLIONS!!!!
First country on the list to donate or help us:
1 ..
Maybe now Americans will realize that charity begins at home.  With millions of our people in need and in poverty, let’s save our money and spend it at home instead of sending it to Egypt , Libya , Pakistan , etc……..
Staten Island, Queens , New Jersey and parts of New York and Connecticut would gladly thank America if we spent the billions there…..

Deficiency Notices in Breezy Point NY

Notice of deficiency by the building inspector in Breezy Point, NY – Are They Kidding?

Notices that threaten to impose fines for people who need to rebuild or renovate their homes and lives after Sandy.

Is government that stupid????

Their response is that the notices were only issued to document the damage. Hmmm – if that was the purpose, seems like they could’ve taken 5 minutes and created a new document to mail that said something like —

“We understand that people are working on finding the problems and a solution for them as quickly as possible to rebuild their homes and their lives. This notice is being sent in order to recognize and note there has been damage on your property. This will let you know that your local government is aware of the problem and supports your efforts.”

Of course that was off the top of my head – so it can definitely be improved on. However, off the top of my head, is much better than using an old form that says there is a potential penalty for inaction.

Just something for the local, state and federal government agencies to consider….

FEMA Relief in New York and New Jersey?

Its been several weeks since Super Storm Sandy roared up the east coast and wreaked havoc on the New York and New Jersey coast. We all remember the problems in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama after Hurricane Katrina. And who could forget the very vocal media – taking every possible opportunity to complain about the Bush administration’s response. However, the media has handled the Obam administration response to Sandy – in a polar opposite way.

Where are the reporters and the cameras to tell the rest of the country – what is actually happening in these storm ravaged areas? Where is the media – and why aren’t they questioning the administration on their handling of this crisis?

After Katrina – there were many problems to resolve, but a big difference is that the weather along the Gulf coast was warm. While not having electricity was an issue and a very big inconvenience – there were no concerns that people would freeze. This storm is very different. Temperatures continue to drop as we move toward the end of November – overnight temperatures are cold. In the mid Atlantic area, we are having overnight temps in the upper 20s, the 30s and occasionally 40 – the northeast will have very similar temperatures.

The Sandy survivors have already had one snowfall since the storm devastated the area – and there will be many more weather conditions that are life theratening. Whatever the government response has been is simply NOT SUFFICIENT. President Obama’s response to any tough question seems to be feigned outrage lately.

Well President Obama – The nation is outraged that you are NOT answering and addressing the tough questions. Smiling at the cameras is useless —- the first term and your training period is OVER. It is time to step up and be a leader. We realize that is NOT one of your strong points, but it is time to lead this country and to lead in a way that benefits the country. If you acknowledge that you are NOT able to lead, then get out of the way and cut the crap with the unnecessary regulations and let the fine people of this country help one another.

Chuck Norris talks about this in his post today – you will not believe the horrible conditions many Sandy survivors are dealing with every day. While the president travels through Asia — people in the US NEED help. I bet my Conservative friend will notice the examples in Chuck Norris’ post that show Christians and businesses are able to mobilize very effectively — seems there is a lesson there for the government…. aren’t these Republican and Conservative strengths??

Exclusive: Chuck Norris applauds private efforts to help Hurricane Sandy victims

“The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: ‘I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.’”

– President Ronald Reagan

Those wise and yet haunting words spoken by one of our nation’s greatest presidents couldn’t ring more true – especially today, as winter sets in on an estimated 130,000 of our fellow Americans who are still struggling without power. Many live without heat, hot water or inhabitable homes and question the government’s efforts to alleviate their condition.

Amid the election frenzy, several mainstream media outlets instantly praised the Obama administration’s response to the Hurricane Sandy devastation in the Northeast. But let’s look beneath the congratulatory headlines to see the real and horrifying picture of what’s happening.

Right now, homeless Americans are literally freezing, wrapped in blankets and trash bags as they struggle to survive in FEMA tent cities such as New Jersey’s “Camp Freedom,” which reportedly “resembles a prison camp.”
