Every day there seems to be something in the news that leaves me speechless and then mad. How can people be so completely misguided or are they doing these things to further destroy the US? I’m just not sure most days. And I’m really not sure how I missed the build up of this story last year. But I’m paying attention now…. I’m interested in hearing what you think….
I understand that some people receive more discipline in school than others. Its happened since the beginning of time and its unlikely to stop any time soon. I went to school in a county elementary and then high school. There were some people who did get in more trouble. I don’t really know how I would classify them – but it wasn’t racial in my schools and it wasn’t ethnic. Of course – in the 70s and 80s it was a very different atmosphere than it is now.
Some time ago —
National Urban League (www.nul.org) president and CEO Marc H. Morial has applauded President Barack Obama’s creation of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African-Americans, calling it “an important endeavor that will highlight the barriers and challenges to African-American educational achievement, and develop solutions to improve outcomes.”
I’m all for educational excellence for everyone – although I’ve yet to see a presidential order that made any meaningful difference. Maybe I’m off base – or as Bill O’Reilly says – “tell me where I’m wrong”….
In my experience, the kids who apply themselves are the ones who excel. The kids who want to excel and who see the advantages of excelling are the ones who have the best opportunities. I enjoyed school and I am still hungry to learn new things all the time.
People who wanted to learn, who figured they would make the best of the situation, the people who knew the repercussions at home if they didn’t try their best, and so many other motivators helped a wide variety of people in my schools succeed.
Let me share a story with you – that will be of special interest to people who followed the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman story.
For over three years we have been tracking this new federal protocol of qualifying school punishment for misbehavior around the race of the offender. The origin of the approach actually stems from Miami-Dade, Florida, and a diversionary tolerance program initiated by School Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.
Carvalho is a close ally, and political affiliate, of both Barack and Michelle Obama. Carvalho also turned down a position inside the Dept of Education which would have placed him second only to Education Secretary Arnie Duncan.
Carvalho’s program within the Miami-Dade school district actually preceded theExecutive Order given by Barack Obama which initiated the new DOJ directives around “Disparate Impact”, establishing the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African-Americans. Effectively placing “quotas” on school discipline based on race.
It was also Carvalho’s widely heralded program which led to the Miami-Dade School Police Department putting Trayvon Martin into diversionary programs using School Discipline to replace Criminal Justice in an effort to avoid a criminal record.
If you remember some of the less publicized details of the Zimmerman trial – you may recall the reason Trayvon Martin was with his father (in the area where Zimmerman lived) is because he was kicked out of school for various infractions. So, this diversionary program was used to help him avoid a criminal record and inadvertently ended up leading to his death and a huge uproar throughout the country and definitely ramped up the racial issues in the US.
So – how do you think the new regulations are working out so far?
