Note from Parent About Child Going to School on Veteran’s Day

I rarely if ever encourage the idea of closing schools or for missing school. But this parent’s logic does make sense. Martin Luther King and the work he did should be remembered and if there is a day off from work and school – seems to me there should be ways of helping the kids understand WHY there is a day set aside to commemorate a person or event. A day off for a person or entity they know nothing about seems like a very wasted opportunity.

But back to the letter – we have millions of current, past and future military service men and women throughout the nation – and if we give kids the day off for many other reasons, parents who feel they want/need to spend the day with their child should have that option.

What do you think??

Many schools might keep a minute or so of silence at 11:11 am. This teaches students the meaning of Veterans Day formerly Armistice Day (when I attended school).
